ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between inventory management and profitability in manufacturing organizations, using Ama Breweries Plc as a case study. Inventory, comprising raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods, represents one of the largest components of working capital in manufacturing firms, making its effective management central to both operational efficiency and profitability. Recent Nigerian studies focused specifically on the brewery sub-sector lend strong support to this link: an evaluation of Nigerian Breweries Plc found that inventory management, while important for operational effectiveness, did not have a direct, statistically significant impact on financial performance over the period studied (Umoh, 2024), while a related assessment of firms in the Nigerian brewery industry found that stock turnover, alongside debtors' collection and creditors' payment periods, significantly affected profit after tax (Mgbobi, 2024). A further study of brewery manufacturing firms in South-West Nigeria similarly examined how inventory management practices relate to firm performance (Alo & Lugard, 2024). This study was guided by four objectives: to determine the extent to which ineffective inventory management in Ama Breweries Plc has caused low productivity, to examine the extent to which insufficient inventory of finished goods causes loss of sales, to identify the degree to which the poor inventory management method used by the company has resulted in low productivity, and to ascertain whether the company has suffered from poor management and control of inventories. A survey and case study research design was adopted, with data collected through questionnaires administered to staff of Ama Breweries Plc and analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings are expected to provide practical insight for improving inventory management practices in Nigerian manufacturing firms.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Inventory management refers to the process by which an organization plans, controls, and oversees the ordering, storage, and use of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods. For manufacturing organizations in particular, inventory often represents one of the largest single components of working capital, meaning that how effectively it is managed carries direct implications for production efficiency, sales, and ultimately profitability.

Nigerian studies focused specifically on the brewery sub-sector, which shares close operational similarities with the case examined in this study, offer useful and sometimes contrasting insight into this relationship. An evaluation of inventory management and organisational performance at Nigerian Breweries Plc over a ten-year period found that although inventory management remained crucial to operational effectiveness, it did not have a direct, statistically significant impact on the company's financial performance as measured by return on assets, suggesting that other operational and financial factors may moderate the inventory-profitability relationship (Umoh, 2024). This contrasts with findings from an assessment of firms across the Nigerian brewery industry, where stock turnover was found to significantly and positively affect profit after tax, alongside debtors' collection period and creditors' payment period, together explaining a substantial proportion of the variation in profitability observed (Mgbobi, 2024). A related study of brewery manufacturing firms in South-West Nigeria similarly investigated how specific inventory management practices relate to firm performance within the sub-sector (Alo & Lugard, 2024).

Beyond the brewery sub-sector, broader research on Nigerian manufacturing firms reinforces the importance of inventory management to production outcomes. A study of manufacturing firms in Nigeria found that inventory availability, accuracy, and coverage each had a measurable effect on production efficiency, with poor inventory practices identified as a contributing factor where firms experienced operational setbacks (Odumusor, 2024). Taken together, this literature suggests that while the general link between inventory management and profitability is well supported, its strength and statistical significance can vary from one brewery firm to another, underscoring the value of a firm-specific examination such as this study of Ama Breweries Plc.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Manufacturing firms in Nigeria, including those in the brewery sub-sector, continue to grapple with inventory-related challenges that affect productivity and sales, even as the empirical evidence on how strongly inventory management relates to profitability remains mixed. Some studies within the brewery sub-sector have found a statistically significant relationship between inventory-related variables and profitability (Mgbobi, 2024), while others examining a major Nigerian brewery over a comparable period found no significant direct relationship (Umoh, 2024). This inconsistency suggests that firm-specific factors play an important role, yet there is limited firm-level evidence specifically addressing how ineffective inventory management, insufficient finished goods inventory, and poor inventory control methods have affected productivity and sales at Ama Breweries Plc. It is this gap that the present study seeks to address.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The major objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of inventory management in a manufacturing company. The specific objectives of this study are:

i. To determine the extent to which the ineffective management of inventory in Ama Breweries Plc has caused low productivity in the company. ii. To examine the extent to which insufficient inventory of finished goods causes loss of sales to the company. iii. To identify the degree to which the poor inventory management method used by the company has resulted in low productivity in the company. iv. To ascertain whether the company has suffered from poor management and control of inventories.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. To what extent has ineffective management of inventory caused low productivity in Ama Breweries Plc?
  2. To what extent does insufficient inventory of finished goods cause loss of sales to the company?
  3. To what degree has the poor inventory management method used by the company resulted in low productivity?
  4. Has the company suffered from poor management and control of inventories?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Ho1: Ineffective inventory management has no significant effect on productivity in Ama Breweries Plc.

Ho2: Insufficient inventory of finished goods has no significant effect on loss of sales in Ama Breweries Plc.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the management of Ama Breweries Plc and similar manufacturing firms by providing evidence to guide improvements in inventory management practices. It will benefit inventory and operations managers more broadly, and will serve as a reference for future researchers examining inventory management and profitability in Nigerian manufacturing firms.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to examining the relationship between inventory management and productivity/profitability at Ama Breweries Plc, covering the effectiveness of inventory management, adequacy of finished goods inventory, and inventory control methods.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Time and resource constraints limited the study to Ama Breweries Plc rather than a broader sample of manufacturing firms. Some staff respondents were reluctant to disclose full details of internal inventory challenges.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Inventory Management: The process of ordering, storing, controlling, and using a company's raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods.

Profitability: The extent to which a business generates financial gain relative to its expenses and investments.

Productivity: The efficiency with which a company converts inputs into outputs.

Finished Goods: Products that have completed the manufacturing process and are ready for sale.

Manufacturing Organization: A business engaged in converting raw materials into finished products through industrial processes.
