CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Churches and modern technology are becoming more closely linked, and this extends to how churches receive and manage money. Members make many kinds of payments during church activities, including tithes, general and special offerings, thanksgiving, harvest and covenant offerings, giving to the needy, and building project donations. Digital tools such as POS terminals, bank transfers, mobile banking apps and QR codes now offer alternatives to physical cash for all of these.
The shift in Nigeria has been driven partly by national policy. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced its cashless policy in 2012 to modernise the payment system, reduce banking costs, widen financial inclusion and make monetary policy more effective (Chukwuma, 2024). This policy led to more electronic banking and electronic payments. In practice, a cashless system is one where transactions do not rely only on physical notes but are supported by cards, mobile banking applications and other payment platforms (Chukwuma, 2024). Cash-based giving carries well-known risks, including theft, counterfeit notes, the inconvenience of carrying large sums and the delay of depositing collections.
Churches have had to respond. A study of churches in Enugu found that the cashless policy affected many of them through lower income, lower attendance and late arrival to services. It also found that many churches adapted by offering other ways to give and by teaching members about the policy, although some members had not yet accepted the change (Chukwuma, 2024). Digital giving is also linked to stewardship. Research on church finances suggests that accountability in financial reporting influences members' willingness to give (Munte & Dongoran, 2018). Industry data from the 2026 Annual Church Giving Report likewise show that, among churches reporting increased giving, digital giving grew more often than cash and cheque giving (Ministry Brands, 2026).
Digital payments are not accepted by all. Some Christians argue that using POS machines or similar tools in church is ungodly. Church leaders who support them respond that banks have made the tools available, that society is going digital, and that they spare members the trouble of finding change or the embarrassment of forgetting cash. In some arrangements, members pay at designated points and present the receipt at the altar as their offering, which supports efficiency and accountability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Cash collections in churches are risky and cumbersome. Money held outside the banking system is not subject to regulatory and operational controls, which makes it harder to monitor and weakens transparency in church finances. Many Nigerians also prefer to carry cash, which keeps large sums outside the formal financial system. Many churches have therefore adopted digital payment methods for offerings and donations.
However, studies on this subject are limited, particularly in Uyo and at the level of individual churches. Little is known about how digital payment systems affect financial management at House on the Rock Church, Uyo. This study investigates that question.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
- To examine the impact of digital payment systems on financial management at House on the Rock Church, Uyo.
- To examine the payment methods currently used in the church.
- To identify the limitations of digital payment systems in church financial management.
1.4 Research Questions
- What is the impact of digital payment systems on church financial management?
- What payment methods are currently used in the church?
- What are the limitations of digital payment systems in church financial management?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: The use of digital payment systems in the church does not promote efficiency and accountability in financial management.
H₁: The use of digital payment systems in the church promotes efficiency and accountability in financial management.
1.6 Significance of the Study
- The findings will help church leaders, executives and the public understand how to align with the CBN's cashless policy to improve financial efficiency and accountability in churches.
- The study will be a resource for scholars interested in further research on this subject and may offer new explanations of how technology affects church finance.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study covers the payment structures currently used at House on the Rock Church, Uyo, and compares them with digital payment systems. It considers the benefits of digital systems for collecting offerings and donations.
Limitations:
- Financial constraint: Limited funds may restrict the researcher's ability to obtain materials and collect data through the internet, questionnaires and interviews.
- Time constraint: The researcher is carrying out the study alongside other academic work, which limits the time available.
